mkondezi womens's group
In late 2015 Dorothy Morris, an artist, teacher and galley owner travelled to Nkhata Bay with HOPEmalawiUK. During her 3 week Batik study trip she also taught tailoring skills to a large group of women in Mkondezi, a village just outside Nkhata Bay Township.
Based at the local school, and with the support and encouragement of headteacher Mary Nyriendra, Dorothy taught her eager students batik, the principles of measuring, pattern making/cutting and how to use sewing machines.
Dorothy raised the funds for the trip herself and was able to leave behind the resources needed to continue the project and fund a part time dressmaker, Beurah Banda, for a few months.
She also left something more important in Mkondezi. By passing on her skills she has given some very deserving people the chance of a better future.
The group hope to continue learning and
A remarkable amount was done in a short time but the project needs more support. if you want to get involved are can help in some way or want to find out more please contact Dorothy Morris
