"The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." –President Barack Obama
Zion Arts Africa Foundation
Zion Africa Arts Foundation is a centre for the encouragement and promotion of the creative talents of young people and provision of arts educating to those in need.
The hope is that the Zion Arts Africa Foundation will inspire and encourage the arts in Nkhata Bay, be it as part of early childhood development or for adults who want to nurture their own creativity.
Creating an environment where kids are free to be themselves, to create, come together, and learn is a gift. As a universal language, art and music opens all cultures to all children. Opportunity for creative self- expression through music and art should be provided to people worldwide through public education, but is often provided only to the wealthy and elite.
Young students living in poverty have little or no chance to learn a musical instrument, or to create, listen and learn about music. Although art is on the agenda in the government run school system, there are simply no resources to encourage talent. It’s a low priority when you can have classes of 100 students. Only very restrictive forms of art are taught and the kids are often told what to draw, with no room for their own self-expression.
MY FAVOURITE THINGS
Malawi. All profits from the sale of prints of Kennedy's work will go to supporting art education in Nkhata Bay at ZION AFRICA ARTS FOUNDATION
zion kennedy phillips
Zion Kennedy Phillips is an accomplished, self-taught artist and musician. Not only did he pay his way through school by selling hand painted postcards to travelers, he largely self funded the grass roots organisation HOPEmalawi by selling his paintings and using the profits for the benefit of the community. He is passionate about promoting local community talent by providing art education and educational support for young people up to the age of 18 through the Early Child Development (ECD) program in Nkhata Bay and at ZAAF.
Art supplies are very hard to come by in Malawi and way beyond the means of ordinary people. If available costs are comparable with UK prices but 90 percent of people in Malawi have an income of less than £1.20 per day.
If you could donate to the ZAAF Fund you'd be helping people live their dreams. Alternatively you could donate materials which we could ship over or your Art Group could sponsor an up and coming artist
